  GENDER PAY GAP NARROWS
Sarah Welfare, Editor

In this issue, we take a closer look at the results of the 2009 Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings published by the Office for National Statistics.

The survey reveals that the gender pay gap has narrowed slightly this year, standing at 12.2% for full-time employees and 22% when both part-time and full-time employees are counted.

It has taken 12 years for the pay gap on each of these measures to fall by around 5%, so while the most recent annual decrease of around half a percentage point was welcomed by campaigners, frustration with the slow rate of progress was voiced.

Our second feature looks at the experience of Southend University Hospital, which has chosen to opt out of Agenda for Change, the national NHS pay framework, and must be one of the very few NHS trusts in the country with a bonus scheme.
