  THE EDITOR'S MESSAGE Issue 718
  ALIGNING CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY AND REWARD
Sarah Welfare, Editor

Corporate responsibility can be a well-meaning but empty concept unless it is put into practice in the ways that organisations manage and reward their people. Our case study on insurance group Aviva shows how a company's reward offering can be part of a corporate responsibility strategy. Flexible benefits enable Aviva staff to take part in carbon offsetting and give charity donations through payroll, while staff receive three days' paid leave to volunteer in the community.

More evidence of recession is seen in our survey on shift payments, which finds that nearly one-third of employers had frozen shift pay at their latest review as part of a broader pay freeze. We include more than 30 examples of shift premia paid by employers.

In this issue, we highlight some of the latest content from Occupational Pensions on XpertHR, including the Government's decision to bring forward its review of the default retirement age.

Our pay reports cover Anglian Water, the prison service, firefighters and the organ-building industry.
