  EQUAL PAY APATHY
Sheila Attwood, Editor

The right to equal pay for equal work for men and women was set out by the Equal Pay Act 1970. However, research from IRS has found that many organisations today are not keen to put in place structures and policies to ensure equal pay.

One in four of the 103 private sector organisations we surveyed have no plans to conduct an equal pay audit. Of those that detected pay inequalities, a significant minority decided to take no further action. It is perhaps no surprise then, that research from Celre, part of the XpertHR Group, recently found that it will be 187 years before the equal pay gap is closed.

These findings are in contrast to a survey we conducted earlier in the year in which we looked at how local authorities are approaching equal pay. Unsurprisingly, given that they have a duty to ensure their pay structures are equality-proofed, all of our respondents had conducted, were in the process of, or were planning, an equal pay audit.

  ANALYSIS

Equal pay audits in the private sector

IRS's latest research investigates how 103 private sector companies are approaching equal pay. Among the key findings are that companies in this sector are reluctant to go through formal equal pay reviews, and that some companies that do conduct a formal audit do nothing with the findings.
