Annual review of pay trends 2012: Private-sector pay
Our analysis of pay awards in the private sector during the past year details their slow, steady growth, but they remain firmly below both inflation and pre-recession levels.

Chemicals, pharmaceuticals and oil: pay settlement levels hold steady
Over the past year, wage awards in the chemicals, pharmaceuticals and oil sector have held steady at 3% and continue to run ahead of those in the private sector as a whole.

Construction: pay deal median falls as recession bites
Against a gloomy background, it is hardly surprising that pay settlement levels in the construction sector have eased, falling from the 2% median recorded by XpertHR in 2010/11 to just 1.5% this time round.

Electricity, gas and water: pay awards stand at 3.2%
Even though utility firms persist in their search for efficiency savings, the sector's settlement levels have risen, albeit gently, over the past 12 months. Employees tied to long-term deals continue to enjoy a premium compared with those agreeing one-year pay awards.

Engineering and metals: outperforms whole economy with median 3% rise The median pay award across the UK engineering and metals sector remains steady, but the proportion of pay freezes has risen and employers are cautious about the future.

Finance: merit pay outstrips basic rises
The median paybill increase in the finance sector matches the UK as a whole, but there are more pay freezes than last year and basic deals dropped down to 1.1%.

Food, drink and tobacco: strong pay growth with median at 3%
The median pay award in the food, drink and tobacco sector has risen to 3% in 2011/12, higher than the UK economy as a whole.

General manufacturing: a year of pay settlement stability
The 2011/12 pay round in general manufacturing has been relatively quiet, with the median award, pitched at 2.6%, showing only a marginal increase on the 2.5% recorded by XpertHR this time last year.

Not-for-profit - charities: pay freezes reduce but median just 1%
Employees in charity organisations continue to suffer from low pay rises and changes to their terms of employment, as the sector feels the strain of ongoing funding cuts.

Not-for-profit - housing associations: pay growth up again
In spite of government spending cuts, housing-association pay agreements have produced relatively strong growth, well above the charity sector and nearer to the UK economy as a whole.

Paper, printing and publishing: sector pay settlements stable
It has been another difficult year for many paper, printing and publishing firms, although some have arguably fared better than others. The overall picture is one of settlement stability, with the median basic pay award worth 2%, exactly the same as 12 months ago.

Retail and wholesale: median pay increase matches whole of UK
As household incomes remain low, consumers continue to exercise caution in their retail spending habits. More retailers have frozen salaries this year, but the national minimum wage uplift has helped shore up sector wages.

Transport and communication: 2.9% median puts sector at top end
Transport and communication pay deals are at the upper end of those in the private sector but the picture within the sector is mixed, our review finds.

PRIVATE-SECTOR PAY
The past year has seen only modest pay rises in the private sector, with the median increase set at just 2.5%, below the prevailing rate of inflation. But this overall figure masks mixed fortunes across the different industries that make up the private sector. For example, while the median pay increase in the charities sector is just 1%, employees in the electricity, gas and water sector typically enjoyed increases of 3.2%.
