  THE EDITOR'S MESSAGE Issue 923
 PROMOTING EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY
NEIL RANKIN

Diversity and equal opportunities at work are being actively promoted by many of the employers in our major survey reported in this issue.

The study investigates the attitudes, practices and experiences of 140 employers. It covers key issues such as the extent of senior management support for equality and diversity initiatives, the locus of responsibility for these areas, budgets and other resources, and the practical steps being implemented.

In our employment law section, we continue our series of guides to the Equality Bill, turning to its sex discrimination proposals, notably equal pay audits and a ban on gagging clauses.

Two case studies look at different ways of improving absence management. At regional department store chain Banburys, these include changes to sick pay and the introduction of a healthcare cash plan.

Our case study of vocational qualifications body NCFE looks at the benefits of improved recruitment, which has resulted in heightened employee engagement, better staff retention and fewer sickness absences.
