 RETURN-TO-WORK INTERVIEWS - A TOOL THAT WORKS
Mark Crail, Editor

Two out of three employers that introduce return-to-work interviews see a reduction in employee absence. According to our research, it is probably the most effective technique in the field of attendance management, and one of the most commonly used.

But how does your experience compare with that of other organisations? In this issue we report the findings of an IRS survey of return-to-work interviews at 182 employers and provide detailed benchmarking data by sizeband and broad economic sector.

Also in this newsletter, we have new data on training, with information on training budgets, the training challenges facing employers, and survey findings on the training interventions rated most highly by HR practitioners.

  NEW-LOOK WEBSITE

XpertHR has been given a new look and feel to help make it easier than ever to find the resources you need. The first major redesign in six years introduces a cleaner, more modern feel. Although the content remains as comprehensive as ever, our aim has been to improve your ability to browse and search the site.

One of the first changes you will notice is that all articles have an icon to show what you can expect to find if you follow the link. Most of these are fairly obvious - a % sign for surveys, and a clock face for the legal timetable, for example. But there is also an explanation of what each of the icons means.

These icons can also be used to improve searches on XpertHR. Once your search results appear, click on a relevant icon to prioritise the type of article you want - whether it is a line manager briefing, reference manual chapter, case report or "how to" guidance.

As you use the site, we hope you will find it easier on the eye and simpler to use than before. However, if you want to find out how to get even more out of XpertHR, we have also expanded and improved the user guide. Find out more...

Survey: Workplace training - time, money and effectiveness

Our annual training survey highlights trends in training budgets and typical levels of spending per employee. It identifies the need to align employee skills with business goals as the main challenge for employers, and provides detailed statistics and analysis of:

  • factors influencing training activities;
  • training days per employee at different levels of the organisation; and
  • the training techniques that our panel believes are the most effective.

Plus, our 86 panel members explain how they went about organising successful training initiatives.

Survey request: Managing employee departures

How long are the notice periods in your organisation, and are there any circumstances under which people are not expected to work all of their notice when they leave? Tell us how your organisation manages voluntary and involuntary employee departures and we will send you a copy of our benchmarking report as soon as it is available.

    Casenotes

Race discrimination: Brunel University and another v Vaseghi and another

Statutory dispute resolution procedures: Sovereign Business Integration plc v Trybus

The timing of an appeal hearing was not reasonable, meaning that the employee's dismissal was automatically unfair, where the notice of the hearing was so short that the employee was unlikely to receive it in time.

Continuity of employment: Vernon v Event Management Catering Ltd

A casual worker who, with the exception of a single two-week break to take a holiday, worked every week for more than three years was an employee and had sufficient continuity of service to claim unfair dismissal. He could demonstrate the existence of a contract of employment in each week during the relevant period and the period of holiday did not break his continuity of employment.
