EU: Commission proposes revised Parental Leave Directive
The European Commission issued a draft Directive in July 2009 implementing the EU-level social partners’ recent amended agreement on parental leave. The new Directive will repeal and replace the current Parental Leave Directive.
France: Law allows more Sunday working
A law published in France’s Official Journal on 11 August 2009 widens the scope of exemptions from the general ban on Sunday working.
Germany: Members of low pay committee appointed
The Minister of Labour appointed the members of Germany’s new low pay committee in August 2009, which will determine whether or not employees in some parts of the economy should be protected by a legally binding sectoral minimum wage.
Ireland: Bill seeks to strengthen sectoral minimum wage system
The Irish Government published draft legislation on 7 August 2009, aimed at strengthening the system whereby binding minimum wage rates are set for specific sectors, and placing it on a more secure legal footing.
Italy: Law reforms wages guarantee fund and pensions
The upper house of the Italian Parliament approved, on 1 August 2009, a special decree, proposed by the Government, containing measures to tackle the economic crisis, including important changes to state pensions and benefits for laid-off workers.
Spain: Government and social partners agree swine flu guidance
The Spanish Government published a guide on 31 July 2009, in cooperation with trade unions and employers’ organisations, on how companies should cope if swine flu affects their staff or there is a large-scale national outbreak.
