 ITALIAN EMPLOYMENT LAW SUMMARISED

The latest of our guides to national employment law, published in this month's issue, looks at Italy, the EU's fourth-largest labour market.

Our guide offers a concise overview of the main points of Italian employment law, as a first point of reference for practitioners and researchers. Following the format of the other guides in the series, we set out the key elements of the law as it applies to:

  • termination of employment.

Distinctive features of Italian employment law include complex rules on dismissals, an extensive system of parenthood-related leave, restrictions on the use of fixed-term contracts, and a key role for collective agreements in applying the law.

Under the Czech EU Presidency, the first half of 2009 saw the adoption of two Directives on labour migration from outside the EU, and the signature by the European-level social partners of an accord revising their 1995 agreement on parental leave. However, attempts to revise the Working Time Directive broke down irretrievably.
