Three million people in the UK combine paid work with unpaid caring responsibilities for an older, disabled or sick relative, partner or friend, amounting to approximately one employee in seven in the workplace. This number is set to increase given that people are living and working longer.

Our article on how employers can offer support to employees offers advice and guidance on practical steps that employers can take. The first of these is encouraging carers to identify themselves as such. It is thought that many people leave the world
of work because of their - often hidden - caring responsibilities.

Employers that encourage carers to combine work with care effectively will reduce the impact on the organisation - both on a day-to-day basis and in the longer term. Our case study of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides an insight into the practical steps that can be taken by employers and the challenges that may be faced on the way.
